Choose an Experienced Guide for Your Goose Hunting Trip

The odds of a successful goose hunt go way up when you've got the right guide with you. Get the edge you're looking for with Westline Guide Service. In business since 1985, we offer some of the best goose hunting in Minnesota. Our ability to consistently bring geese within shooting range makes the experience hard to beat and often times inspiring you to return for more hunts throughout the year.

About the Hunt

  • For your safety and comfort in extreme weather conditions, all of our fields are equipped with heated plywood pits.
  • Large spreads of high-quality decoys (300-500+ per spread) are used in our hunts.
  • Privately leased hunting grounds make for prime shooting zones, increasing your success rate.
  • We suggest that hunters arrive one hour before the sun rises.
  • Guides will organize you and the other hunters in the pits and answer any questions you may have.
  • The hunt ends at noon on an average day. As the season grows colder, the geese often leave the refuge later in the day. (Our guides may use their own judgment in making the decision to hunt past noon.)
  • To ensure your safety and that the geese are in proper gunning range, our hunting guides will call all the shots.
  • Our goose hunting guide season begins in mid-October and ends in late December.
  • Early season hunts depend on crop harvest and bird arrival. Contact us for updates.
  • The giant Canada goose is the most common goose species in Rochester's Silver Lake Refuge.

Items to Bring on Your Goose Hunting Trip

  • Hunting license - You will need to abide by the laws of the State of Minnesota.
  • Clothing - Bring warm clothes with you on the hunt. Our day of hunting starts before the sun comes up, and it's often cold in the hours before the sun warms the fields. Dress in layers so that you can remove gear as the temperature rises.
  • Firearm - You'll need a 12-gauge shotgun that will handle three or three and a half-inch magnums.
  • Ammunition - We recommend 12-gauge three or three and a half-inch shells. BB shot is also recommended. If possible, bring plenty of non-toxic heavy shot.
  • Food and drink - Bring snacks and a beverage to enjoy while you're out in the field. A morning of hunting can seem like a lifetime without having something cold and wet to drink before lunch.
  • Camera - Bring your camera along and keep it stored in a waterproof bag. At the end of the day, you'll be able to preserve your memories with a photo.

Requirements for a Safe Hunt

To ensure your hunting experience is as safe as possible, we have the following requirements:
  • No alcohol or drugs allowed
  • Always have your gun's safety in the "on" position at any time when there is no shooting
  • Geese cannot be shot on or near the ground
  • Geese are only retrieved by guides or dogs, unless directed otherwise by the guides
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us.
